Let's Talk About Grants, Baby!

I have attended all but two Grant Professionals Association (GPA) Annual Conferences since 2005, and those two were only missed because all unnecessary travel and training was slashed from my organization’s budget in 2009 and 2010. (Those were dark days.) There is always something to look forward to at each conference, from reuniting with grant friends and exploring the host city to learning about a new tech tool and finally understanding the ins and outs of in-direct costs. In other words, there is good stuff at every turn.

I was especially excited about the 2018 conference for two reasons.

First, Kimbery Hays de Muga and I were teasing fellow grant professionals about a new partnership and project to be unveiled at the GPA Conference. We were thrilled to launch Fundraising HayDay, a podcast about grants, fundraising, and such. Season one of the podcast includes fourteen free episodes, all available on iTunes and www.fundraisinghayday.podbean.com. Mostly, we were looking forward to feedback from listeners to find out if we managed to balance education and entertainment. We thought we were funny, but was it just us?

Second, Sylvia Redic and I were thrilled to bring back our grant rap duo. Because that is what we do. Where else can I combine my love of 90s rap, grants, and performing with my favorite partner in crime?

In case you missed out, video evidence is provided here. This is always one of my favorite memories of the GPA conference. We’ve tackled Grants, Grants Baby (2016) and Baby Got Grant (2017). This year we featured Sylvia’s vocal pipes with a Salt-N-Pepa classic. Take a listen and follow along with the lyrics below. And if you have any suggestions for 2019 (assuming GPA invites us back), give me a shout at amandadaygpc@gmail.com

Let’s Talk About Grants – best performed to the tune Let’s Talk About Sex by Salt-N-Pepa
Lyrics Written By: Amanda Day

Sly Redic Cut It Up One Time
OoOoOo ohh Uhuhh OoOoOo
Come on!

[Chorus]

Let’s talk about grants, baby
Let’s talk about OMB
Let’s talk about feds, foundations, corporations, that fund me
Let’s talk about grants
Let’s talk about grants
Let’s talk about grants
Let’s talk about grants

Let’s talk about grants right now
to the people online or in the crowd
It keeps coming up anyhow
Don’t decoy, avoid, or make void the topic
Cuz that ain’t gonna stop it
Now we talk about grants in webinars and workshops
GPA, the cream of the crop.
Let’s talk grants dot gov, and how it could be;
sam dot gov, yes of course, how it should be.
Let’s read RFPs, highlighters, can’t miss the important parts
Looking for deadlines. Then deep sigh.
My goodness, it’s due, Sly.

[Chorus]

OIG, make a grant pro stop
Use what you got, have every “i” dot
Site visits happen; we’re prepared for inspection
The place was lit and files cleaner than my kitchen
Checks, pix, reports, purchase orders
Nothing in her binder out of order
Her grants: federal, corporate
Target, to HUD, none were too big for her
to manage or even sub out.
Bill Gates Foundation, was next on her list.
And believe me, you,
It’s as good as true
Ain’t a funder ‘round that she couldn’t write apps for
She went to all the workshops so she should have the chops
But she was mad and sad and feelin’ bad
Thinkin’ about the needs left unfulfilled
Need staff, more stuff, followed next with a check and award
For all you can’t afford

Let’s talk about grants, baby
Let’s talk about OMB
Let’s talks about feds, foundations, corporations, that fund me
Let’s talk about grants (come on)
Let’s talk about grants (do it)
Let’s talk about grants (uh-huh)
Let’s talk about grants

Grant pros, all the grant pros
Louder now, help us out
Come on, all the grant pros
LET’S TALK ABOUT GRANTS, all right
Grant pros, all the grant pros,
Louder now, help us out
Come on, all the grant pros
LET’S TALK ABOUT GRANTS, all right

Yo A, I don’t think they’re gonna play this at GPA
And why not, everybody writes grants
I mean, everybody should be learning how
Come on, how many bosses you know how?

[Chorus]

[Chorus]
